I had a few laughs while compiling this list of the top 10 worst movie sequels of all time. I mean, really, what were they thinking? Sure they were looking for a quick cash grab. The previous movie or movies had been successes, so why not try and cash in one more time. Never mind that the movie doesn’t have a plot, or the acting is terrible. All that matters is that people continue to pay in the vain hope the sequel will somehow be equal to or even surpass the quality of the original. It happens sometimes right? Look at Empire Strikes Back, or Spiderman 2. Still, in most cases the sequel is doomed to be a flop. Here is my list of the top 10 worst movie sequels of all time:

10 – Dumb & Dumberer – When Harry Met Lloyd

Considering the original Dumb & Dumber is one of my favorite comedies of all time it was painful for me to watch this farce of a film that introduces two new actors playing teenage versions of Harry and Lloyd. They should have cast the idiots who green-lighted this horrendous prequel.

9 – Blues Brothers 2000

This sequel was a long time coming, but earns a deserving spot on the list of the top 10 worst movie sequels of all time. What were they thinking? The Blues Brothers was an all time cool classic, and was John Belushi’s crowning comic achievement. I’m sure their intention was to make the film a tribute to the original, but all they succeeding in doing was tarnishing the franchise.

8 – Batman & Robin

Thank God that they reinvented the Batman movie franchise because it would have been really tragic if the legacy of the Dark Knight had been left in the toilet where it was. Michael Keaton was surprisingly good in Tim Burton’s original movie, and Jack Nicholson’s turn as The Joker is legendary, but every sequel after just seemed worse than the last. Batman and Robin was the worst of all though. Absolutely terrible sequel.

7 – Speed 2: Cruise Control

Again, what can I say but that this sequel was absolutely awful. The fact that I had absolutely no expectations going in is the truest tribute to just how bad this movie was. Most of the other films on the list of the top 10 worst movie sequels of all time were follow-ups to classics. The original Speed was a decent action movie, but nothing special. Still, they managed to make the sequel 10 times worse. Bravo.

6 – Star Wars – Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace

Yes, it was technically a prequel,¬†but since it was released after the original trilogy I am going to include it on this list.¬†Remember what I was saying about expectations for a movie sequel? Well, expectations were never higher for a movie than this sci-fi cult classic. It went on to rake in over $400 million at the domestic box office, and legions of fans went to see it again and again, but it was still a huge let down. Jar Jar Binks alone… Shudder.

5 – Staying Alive

The original Saturday Night Fever is a disco classic and a movie that still gets pulled out at parties today. John Travolta’s best work with perhaps the exception of Pulp Fiction. Why did he bother making a sequel? Why did he do Battlefield Earth? After it took an incredible Tarantinto classic to revive his career you’d think he would have learned. Guess not.

4 – Jaws: The Revenge

Some might find it strange to find this movie at such a high spot on the list of the top 10 worst movie sequels of all time, but if that’s the case then you either didn’t see it, or you walked out of the theater part way through and don’t remember even going. I was a big fan of Jaws and Jaws 2 back in the day, and Jaws 3D, though dripping some cheese, was good enough to avoid this list. But when you watch legendary actor Michael Caine going through the motions to collect a paycheck, and sit through the laughable plot where a shark somehow manages to magically track its prey on mission of revenge. Simple laughable. Simply awful.

3 – Matrix Revolutions

Another on the list of the top 10 worst movie sequels of all time that earns its place as a result of high expectations. The original Matrix is one of the most mind-blowing movies of all time. It literally had the theater buzzing. The hype surrounding the sequel, Matrix Reloaded was almost as high as that for The Phantom Menace. After the letdown of the second movie everyone expected Revolutions to tie things up, but instead of answering the questions it simply left us with more. What a mess, and a sad ending to what was once such a promising movie franchise.

2 – Caddyshack 2

The original Caddyshack was an instant classic, and featured some incredible comedic performances from Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and Rodney Dangerfield. It still lives on as a cult classic particularly among those who were teenagers in the eighties. Like so many others on this list the movie studio just couldn’t leave well enough alone. The sequel was an absolute travesty. Thankfully few remember it even exists. Sorry if I opened up a painful wound with this reminder.

1 – The Sting 2

Although there were lots of good candidates for top spot on this list of the top 10 worst movie sequels of all time I could, in good conscience, only award the winning spot to a movie that was the sequel to a film that won 7 Oscars. Many consider the original to be the pinnacle of the late Paul Newman’s amazing career. Thankfully Newman had nothing to do with the terrible sequel that came 10 years later. This piece of junk is a slap in the face to those who worked on the original and should have been thrown in the garbage the moment they wrapped up filming.
